Automated Convenience

Practical reasons to invest in smart shades

Smart shades (also called motorized or automated shades) offer a host of benefits—with effortless control being at the top of the list.

With smart shades, you can raise or lower shades from inside your home with the press of a button on a remote or a tap on a smartphone app; you can also use the same app to control shades from the airport, a beach—anywhere you happen to be, home or away. (And if you have a smart speaker, you can often control your shades with your voice, too.)

You can even schedule smart shades to move automatically at certain times of the day, so you’ll always have the level of light you want, when you want it. For example, you can schedule bedroom shades to automatically open in the morning, for a gentle wake-up, rather than being aroused by a jarring alarm.

Intrigued? Consider some of these other advantages for adding some smarts to your shades.

Control for hard-to-reach windows

Having smart shades makes it a snap to adjust shades on hard-to-reach windows, such as behind furniture, rather than leaving them open or closed all the time.

Simple scene setting

A scene is a preset shade level (open, closed or somewhere in-between) that you can create and save in an app. Let’s say you prefer your kitchen shades to be halfway open while you savor your morning coffee. With a “good morning” scene, your shade would raise to exactly the level you had previously set and saved, with the touch of a button or a voice command (if your shades are integrated with smart speakers).

You can also schedule those scenes to automatically follow your day to day routines (automated schedules even adjust for Daylight Saving Time, so you don’t need to do anything when you gain or lose an hour).

Enhanced security

Give your home a lived-in look while you’re away on vacation—and give yourself greater peace of mind—by scheduling shades to raise and lower at set times during the day.

And if your smart shades integrate with other manufacturers’ smart home devices or home automation systems, you can enhance security even more. For example, you might turn on an “away” setting as you walk out the door, which activates your alarm and door locks and lowers your shades.

Improved UV protection

Over time, the sun’s rays can damage furniture, flooring and even fine artwork. With smart shades, you can block those rays when they’re at their highest during the day, without going from window to window to lower them manually. Simply schedule them to automatically close during glaring midday hours (and open in late afternoon).
